Getting Ripped With XFlowsion

At the beginning of the year H and I were lucky enough to be chosen to participate in a new yoga/fitness system created by Eric Paskel called XFlowsion. For 30 days we did intense yoga/dance/martial arts 4 times a week and ate according to the XFlowsion diet (whole grains, veggies, fruits, etc, etc). By the end of the program I lost 11lbs. A month after the program I dropped another 9lbs and ended up at 163lbs / 14.5% bodyfat. Well Christmas has come early this year because Eric has moved to LA from Michigan and has offered 3 weeks of free XFlowsion classes to those who participated in the original program. The XFlowsion commercial will be re-shot, AND Eric will be opening up his own gym sometime in Jan/Feb.

So H and I are back in XFlowsion boot-camp again. We started Friday. The schedule is Tues/Fri/Sat/Sun which means we just completed our 3rd XFlowsion class today. All I can say is that XFlowsion is one hell of a workout. H and I have been doing yoga at home and at various yoga centers, but nothing compares to Eric’s classes. By the end of each class I am absolutely exhausted. I never sweat as much in any other workout than XFlowsion. It takes a lot of concentration, strength, flexibility and endurance to get through his classes. It’s intense. But it’s as intense as you want it to be because Eric is so mellow. Each class is completely different too (other than the typical yoga down-dogs and chattarungas mixed in with everything). So now I’m starting off at my new weight of 163lbs/15% bodyfat and I’m hoping to get down to 10% bodyfat by Christmas. That means I need to lose 5% of my weight in bodyfat which would be 8lbs. To accomplish this I’m going to try to be even more precise with my nutrition. Using the Harris-Benedict principle, I can assess my basal metabolic rate — also known as BMR:

Men:
66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

66 + (6.3 x 162) + (12.9 x 71) - (6.8 x 34) = 1771

I need to multiply this by 40% and add the total since I normally work out 3-4 times a week.

This means I need to eat 2,479 calories a day just to maintain my current body weight. So I need to create a caloric deficit be reducing calories. 1lb is roughly 3500 calories. So if I decrease my calories by 500/day I will lose 1lb a week. If I can also burn 500 calories a day I could lose 2lbs a week - which would put me 2lbs away from being 10% bodyfat in 3 weeks. The big challenge is that it is the holidays and H and I love food. That means on Thanksgiving we will not be following the diet. But luckily, Eric will have an XFlowsion class Friday morning to make up for our dietary “sins”.

Out of curiosity I asked Google how many calories Bikram yoga burns (it’s the closest I could think to XFlowsion). I know it it’s going to be different for everybody since it depends on your practice intensity and a lot of other factors, but from what I could find it sounds like it’s possible to burn 600-700 calories in an hour. So XFlowsion four times a week would be 2400 calories burned at the least. I will also be hitting the weights hard at the gym twice a week and have one day to rest and recover.

During this training period I also need to make sure I eat enough calories to keep my metabolism running high. That means I need to eat approx 400 calories a meal 5 times a day which would put me at 2000 calories which is roughly the 500 caloric deficit I need to burn fat.

So last time I lost 11lbs in 4 weeks doing XFlowsion 4x week and lifting on and off for that period of time while moderately following the XFlowsion diet. That means I should have no problem hitting 10% bodyfat in 3 weeks.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I find it hard to stick to any kind of diet during the holidays but this year Heather and I had our own Thanksgiving by ourselves since we couldn’t afford to visit our families. For Thanksgiving we cooked:

• A honey brined free-range Heritage turkey
• Green bean casserole with organic green beans
• Oyster stuffing made with Marcona almonds and oysters
• Horseradish mashed potatoes made with organic potatoes
• Broccoli salad
and…
• Ginger snap Pumpkin Pie made with organic Pumpkin and raw creme

Everything was delicious!

Thanksgiving is also a good time to actually give thanks for all the blessings in your life. No matter what your situation is, there is always things to be thankful for. It’s a good exercise in positive thinking! For me I’m thankful for my good health, my job (even though it’s not exactly what I want to do), my beautiful wife, my supportive family, Heather’s supportive family, all the talents I have been blessed with, the life I have been given and all the successes I have achieved.

Thanksgiving

H and I were planning on going to the farm for Thanksgiving, but house construction issues are keeping us here in LA. So this means we will be cooking our own Thanksgiving meal. On the menu is:

Organic Roast Turkey (a 12lb bird)
Broccoli Salad
Oyster Casserole
Horseradish Mashed Potatoes
Candied Yams
Orange Rolls (overnighted from the farm)
Homemade Chocolate Pecan Pie
Homemade Pumpkin Pie

Did I mention that we’re cooking it all? (Heather mostly with my help).

I actually wanted to film the whole cooking process as well to put together a short film in the vein of Tortilla Soup/Pieces of April. But we’ll see how things go…

What matters in life

Last Thurs Heather and I celebrated our 4 year anniversary! Sometimes I still can’t believe that I married my dream girl. When I first met her she was this incredibly hot redhead with a smile that would light up a room. Every guy was interested in her and I knew right then that she was out of my league. This was the kind of girl that I had absolutely no chance with. Plus, she was in a serious relationship. A year later on Thanksgiving we started our whirlwind romance. We never spent a moment apart. Then on Oct 7, 2000 I became the luckiest man in the world as I found myself standing at the alter with this incredible, beautiful, creative, talented, intelligent girl under candelight in a small church made of glass on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Now we have a life together and I am a better man because of my girl.

I love you baby! You are the best part of my life!

Family

Today I received an email from my mom telling me, my brothers and sister that we forgot my dad’s birthday. I feel horrible. Especially since all us kids have moved out of the house and this was probably my father’s first birthday alone with just my mother. My mom said they went out to eat Chinese buffet (my dad’s favorite restaraunt) and the waitresses sang Happy Birthday in Chinese to him. I really wish I could have been there. I miss my family. I only really get to see my whole family once a year during the holidays. It’s either Thanksgiving or Christmas. It makes it harder now that I’m married because we have to split our time between Heather’s family and my family. We both miss our families and it’s nice to be home either at my parents house, or at the farm (Heather’s family).

One of my hopes is that I could soon “make it” as an actor and be at a place where we could help take care of both our families. I also want to make my parents proud - to prove to them that I really can do this “acting” thing and be successful. As my parents know I have been chasing dreams all my life. Hopefully one day I will achieve them. I guess this is what my parents wanted for me because my father gave me the Chinese name of Chiu Da-Wei meaning “reaching for the top”. (it’s funny because when Heather and I talk about this she says she wishes they named me “GETTING to the top” or “ACHIEVING success” instead of just “reaching”).

Tomorrow my sister will be in town visiting. I look forward to it. My sister and I don’t get to spend a lot of time together. She’s the youngest and I’m the oldest. I also tend to be over-protective since I always picture her as my “baby” sister. Well she ain’t no baby anymore. She’s graduated and out in the real world. I just hope that maybe I could instill some piece of wisdom or good advice. It’s my Chinese side coing out. But who am I kidding. I myself need a lot of wisdom and good advice.

I can’t believe I’m 31. Playtime is over.

Ok. I’m gonna shutup now.

Back in class…

Tonight I was back in class after the short Thanksgiving break. A couple of the scenes are now “on their feet” which means that the lines are memorized and the actors include movement in the scene (before we were all just performing the scenes sitting at a table on-stage). I continue to be impressed by the progress everyone is making with the training. People have very convincing accents (Texan, Manchester) and there is full emotion in the scenes. Blocking is still being worked on, which sometimes trips up the performers, but all the scenes are progressing nicely. I actually didn’t perform tonight. I will now be performing at Sat classes for Tom. My partner and I have actually scheduled two rehersals for this Thurs and Fri so we can be full force on Sat and get the approval from our acting coach to put our scene on it’s feet as well. The notes I am working on for my scene is to really be brash. Tom thought I was being to formal. I need to loosen up my character a bit and give him more colors in the scene. I need to portray a no-nonsense, hard-hitting, powerful man who hates women, yet is very attracted to this women whom he perceives is undermining him.

Thanksgiving is over. Must train for Christmas.

I’m going back on a diet and training schedule starting tomorrow. Today Heather and I hit the local GNC and bought a bunch of supplements. This months edition of Men’s Health had a list of some essential vitamins and supplements that men should take as protection for cancer, heart disease, memory loss, and general well being. This included:

Boron - To protect your prostate
Calcium - To strengthen bones
Chromium - To regulate insulin
CoQ10 - For energy
Creatine - For muscle performance AND memory enhancement
Folic Acid - To improve blood flow
Glucosamine - To improve joints
Omega-3 - To protect the heart
Selenium - To protect against cancer
Vitamin E - To slow aging

Of course, a good multi-vitamin is included in this regimine. I also will continue drinking a lot of green tea, going low-carb for a week and working hard at the gym. I want to train hard enough so I can afford to splurge the week of Christmas.

Update:

Right now I’m just using the GNC brand of creatine. There are tons of different kinds , but from the research I just did on Google, creatine manufactured from Germany is the purest. Here’s some links for your research:

Thanksgiving at Ferguson Farms

After waking up at 4.30am Indiana farm time, driving 3.3 hours to Chicago in the bone-chilling wind and flying 4 hours in a plane with bratty, noisy, kicking kids sitting directly behind us, Heather and I arrived back in Los Angeles 68 degree weather this morning. It was a beautiful day to be back home.

We had a very busy, but enjoyable Thanksgiving. Heather has a large family that is spread across Indiana and there are lots of people to visit and see. I spent a lot of time sitting in different living rooms listening to long conversations about family, friends, farming and the local community. Things are very different on the farm than I’m used to. For one, everyone gets up very early in the mornings to take care of farming “business” which includes tending to the thousands of ducks in the buildings out back, tending to the dogs, the horse and other farming things which I know nothing about. Second, nobody seems to lock anything on the farm. All the cars are always unlocked with the keys in them and all the doors to each house are unlocked as well. We would travel to people’s houses and walk right in. This is something that I don’t think I’ll ever get used to. But it’s nice. It’s quiet and there is a lot of open space. This of couse is quite opposite to life in Los Angeles.

Thanksigiving itself was quite a feast. There was horseradish mashed potatoes (Heather’s specialty), regular mashed potatoes, green bean cassarole, oyster cassarole, twice baked sweet potatoes, turkey (or course), orange rolls (a favorite) and apple salad. For dessert we had a choice of homemade apple pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie and a Dairy Queen ice cream cake to celebrate November birthdays (which included Heather although her Birthday is in December). So we basically ate a lot of food, played a card game with Heather’s niece and nephew, watched a movie, went to visit more people, came back and ate some more.

The next day we had a Ferguson family photo session at Heather’s uncle’s house. Even though the entire Ferguson family has accepted me as a part of the family, sometimes I still feel out of place. The photo session was one of those times. Looking at some of the photos it was a little wierd to see this big caucasion family with one asian guy in the mix. But there I am smiling in the Ferguson family portrait that will probably be hanging in several farm houses for years to come.

Earlier in the week I asked Heather whether or not she thinks that I am the first Asian to come through this farming town. She said, “Probably.” That’s kinda cool. Good to know I’m mixing things up and causing a small stir in this rural community. I could feel people watching Heather and I at times when we were at the new super Wal-Mart in town or at the local diner. I always felt a little self-conscious, but it didn’t bother me. Being different is something I’ve gotten used to and even enjoy.

We’re going to the farm

Once again I’m up at 2.35am and I’m exhausted. I have to go to work tomorrow morning and then be at LAX with Heather in the afternoon to catch a flight to the farm for Thanksgiving. I haven’t packed yet. Heather said she would pack my things. I love my wife. I will be blogging from the farm using the very cool AudBlog service and my new MPx200 Smartphone!!! I couldn’t wait any longer so I went to Best Buy and picked up the phone. The only problem is that AT&T was upgrading their systems and could not handle migrating my old TDMA account to the new GSM plan. Luckily a very helpful AT&T rep was at the store and I told him that I wanted to activate the new phone using a new number - then, when the AT&T systems are up, I will transfer my old number to my new phone and cancel my old plan. Well, that worked. So now I have a very cool Smartphone.

Here comes the Holidays…

Today after I had returned from rehersal, Heather and I started strategizing our Holiday schedule. We bought our tickets to see my family in Utah and started making a list of everything that needs to be done before going to the farm (Heather’s family in Indiana). Luckily, we started our Chirstmas shopping a month ago so there is less stress on buying presents. But we still will have a hectic schedule. This next week is CRAZY for me. I have appointments everyday that include freelance computer consulting, my acting class, the “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Asian Men” show and of course, there is my day job as well. I have to remember to “book out” with my agents for thanksgiving… I should make a note of that right now…

BTW, Heather and I and a friend (that can’t be proper english) saw Matrix: Revolutions on Friday. The end left me a little confused. The special effects were amazing, the action was pretty cool, the story was ok, but the philosophy of the Matrix and its ending was a little disappointing. In summary, (SPOILER?) the movie is about the “Matrix” having a core dump after Neo and Agent Smith collide - then resets itself. If you didn’t understand that, don’t worry. Go see the movie and you’ll have the same confused feeling at the end of the movie. The movie didn’t suck, I’m glad I spent the money to see it on the big screen. I guess they just couldn’t outdo the wonderment that was created from the very first movie.

While I’m talking about movies, the next big movie event I’m REALLY looking forward to is the final Lord of the Rings installment. The trailer looks amazing. The Last Samurai, and Troy look pretty interesting as well…

AND ALSO… did I not mention that the show I’m in - “Everything you Wanted to Know About Asian Men” opens this Friday in Santa Monica?

FINALLY… just a quick “shout-out” to my old friend Denny whom I haven’t talked to in years and called me out of the blue on Friday…
