All I need is a small stage and a mic.

I recently asked around for suggestions for open mic nights and received a pretty good response. I’ve compiled the list below. My goal is to perform once a week at a open mic whether it’s stand-up comedy, poetry or a monologue. I have material for all three categories ’cause I’m bad like that :).

I know where you at -> the CBS Showcase audition

So this week I had a last minute audition for a new Boost Mobile commercial. Looks like Boost Mobile will be introducing GPS functionality in their phones since the lines went something like “I know where you at. I can SEE where you at.” while we stared at our phones. It’s funny ’cause the breakdown I was told was Asian Gangsta. They wanted to see a gangsta swagger. Crazy huh? The cool thing is that for most of the people there it was actually a callback, so the audition was in front of the ad agency. I guess they wanted to try to mix it up a little and throw some Asians in there. We’ll see what happens.

Tuesday was the CBS Comedy Showcase auditions. They kept to a strict 1min time limit and would cut you off if you went over. Luckily for me I developed my 1min monologue from my old stand-up material and also got coaching from an acting coach who loved it. I feel like I really knocked it out of the park, but I guess we’ll see if I get invited to perform at the showcase. I won’t hold my breath.

This Sunday I return to the open-mic scene and will be performing stand-up comedy at Mezclao in Hollywood. I haven’t really told anyone because right now I just need to work out my material and try some new things (along with some old stuff). I will eventually be performing spoken word at different open-mic venues as well - once I get my spoken word material written :) If you decide to come out and see me sweat it out on stage (possibly literally) - keep in mind that I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my sh*\t :). Also, don’t be afraid to come by and say Hi!

And if you really want to see me act you should join my scene study class every Sunday at the Joanne Baron/DW Brown acting studio (the website sucks but classes are intense and very methodical).

I gotta remember to start interviewing headshot photographers so I can get new photos with my shaved head :)!

No Pain No Gain

I’m a mess right now. My mouth is very sore from the impromptu oral surgery I had done this afternoon. I went to the oral surgeon today to check my teeth because the left side of my jaw is a little swollen. I had my wisdom teeth removed about two months ago so I didn’t know why I might have swelling. I figured it was probably an infection where my wisdom tooth use to be. Well I was right. The doctor told me that I probably got food stuck back in there that caused an infection and now they had to clean it out. At first this didn’t sound too bad. I thought it might just mean a normal teeth cleaning. But 10min later I found myself across from a tray of needles, scalpel blades and suture string. Basically he had to go in and re-open my gum to clean out the infection then attach a tube to drain out the rest of it over the next few days. So now I have a freakin tube sewn into the side of my mouth. They said I would be a little sore, but they lied. After the anesthesia wore off I was in major pain and had to go home to take a vicaden that I had leftover from my wisdom teeth extraction. On top of all that, my hamstrings are really sore from the killer back workout I did the other day. I’m just a mess.

Sunday I’m back in scene study class and suppose to be doing a table read of the play “High Heels”. Sounds like a comedy. I’m not sure if I’ll be up to performing on Sunday.

Day 5 of 10: My eBay Adventure

No new bids today. The auction is now halfway done. I’m trying to stay hopeful that eventually the right connections will be made and I will receive a legitimate bid. But whatever. This was just a crazy idea I had to try.

Today I had a print go-see for an Intel ad. I legitimately forgot my headshot so the casting studio had to call my agent - who in turn called me to say “WHY DID YOU FORGET YOUR HEADSHOT!!!” My agency faxed over my headshot which looked like crap. Honestly I don’t care for these print auditions. They don’t pay all that much (well that’s not completely true), but it’s not something I particularly care for.

My weekend is jammed pack full of acting stuff: an ADR session for the indie film Mah Jong, the last day of principal shooting for the comedy pilot “Jake Off” and scene study class.

David Chiu - the Interrogator

The other day I received a DVD copy of the indie film I worked on in Washington DC. Written by first time writer/director Raghav Vajjhala the film is titled “Mother’s Day Special” and combines women, sunglasses, guns, commercialism and violence all on Mother’s Day. I was honestly surprised at the quality of the production and editing. It totally made the film work. Raghav was smart to hire a small professional production company to actually shoot and produce his short film. The end result makes this quirky, surreal, dark comedy film work and it’s amazing how well it all came together knowing that every shot and setup was rushed because of limited time constraints. They did well with the footage they got.

Here’s my little part in the film as the interrogator.

Ready to Tanqueray?

Ready to Tanqueray? I sure was when I showed up at the casting studio dressed in my shirt, tie and trendy sport jacket. The audition was easy - “pretend you’re at the most fabulous party in Antarctica listening to a musician play Christmas music using wine glasses”. It’s one of those auditions where it’s all about your luck look. We’ll see if the ad agency thinks I would “fit” the commercial.

I also got called last second for an IBM print ad. They were looking for a professional looking IT person who also looks good wearing boxing gloves. They took 3 pictures and a three minute video interview of each person. I’d hate to be the person who has to go through all that material for 50+ poeple!

Last Friday H and I went to a screening party to view some footage from the indie movie “Mah Jong” where I play the character of “Manny” - a wanna be gambler and hustler who drags the main character back into the world of gambling. The footage looked great and I was happy to see that I did a pretty decent job acting wise especially in my last few scenes. Can’t wait to see the final cut!

Saturday we continued shooting scenes for the comedy pilot “Jake Off”. This time we used my garage and surrounding streets as locations. It was a lot of fun that lasted from 9am - 12.30pm. The hidef footage looks really, really good and we only have a couple more scenes to shoot.

I’m back at the acting studio again! I’m now taking a scene study class and working on a scene from the play Doubt. It’s a really tough scene but I’ve already learned a lot from the past four classes. This class is something I really needed to continue growing as an actor.

On another note, my laptop hard drive crashed HARD. I’m now frantically trying to recover as much data as possible. Luckily I backed up my drive a couple months ago and also saved all my important editing projects to external drives. The lesson I learned: regularly BACKUP your hard drive!!!!

Everything Illuminated

I’ve kinda been neglecting my blog for a while now. A lot of it has to do with feeling uninspired, unmotivated and uncreative. But I’m trying to get back on track running the marathon towards my goals and dreams. Here’s a summary of everything to date:

My “role” in the corporate world
In July I was “laid-off” (aka fired) by some lame ass dot-com because they didn’t like my attitude. You couldn’t really blame me though, the place had a high turn-over rate and there were people quitting/leaving all the time. It was a pretty easy job though. Nice dot-com style perks (catered lunches, massages on Mon, nice location in Santa Monica, decent pay). It was my bad. I took the job for granted. So I got booted and landed in a web consultancy contract job across the street (literally). Things were going great there, people liked what I was doing, nice casual atmosphere - then I received a job offer from another company. Another company that wasn’t a dot-com. A very conservative corporate organization. I’ve never worked in a shirt and tie environment so I hesitated on accepting the offer. The consultancy I was contracting for decided they wanted to try to make me an offer as well and put me through a gruelling round of interviews for three days - technology interview, creative interview, project management interview. Everyone liked what I had to say in each respected area but the question always came up “How willing are you to travel?” Well considering that most of the people in that office traveled for more than 50% of the time I said “No”.

So now I am sitting in a fairly large cubicle with high walls and an old computer on my desk. I’m dressed in a formal shirt, tie, trousers and dress shoes (I had to buy an entirely new wardrobe for this job). I’ve slicked my hair back and am clean shaven. I am now playing a new role. The role of a hot shot corporate worker. I walk differently and talk differently. I’m all business. And my new character has already gotten in trouble. I got in trouble for being PROACTIVE! After three personal meetings with corporate bigwigs on whom I’m not allowed to contact directly (because I’m just a peon), I find it ironic that I initially got “laid off” for not being proactive, and now that I am proactive, in this new job I could get fired as well!

Ah, the drama of real life!

On location back east for “Mother’s Day”
I recently got word that the final edit for the short film “Mother’s Day” has been completed. I’m pretty impressed with how fast they finished editing. My short film “Supernova” (written and directed by Roy Eisenstein) took me 3 months to edit! I’m interested to see how the project came out since it was shot with a professional crew hired by a first time writer/director. It will also be very interesting to see my part in it since they only had 15min to shoot all my lines before they had to be out of that location!

I’m glad I participated though. It gave me a chance to visit friends and family in the DC/Virginia/Maryland area!

“Supernova”
I finished editing it the other night! What a great learning experience. Roy wrote/shot/directed it and I starred/edited/scored it. I will be posting it here soon…

“Anthem”
Another monologue piece written by Roy Eisenstein starring a friend of mine (Jeff Ross). I helped shoot some of the footage and now I’ve started editing this piece as well.

“Jake-Off”
A film-noir, monty-python-esque comedy pilot written by the talented Roy Eisenstein, starring Chase and an ensemble cast (including me) and shot by the multi-talented Chris Nelson and his amazing stash of high-end camera equipment and accessories.

Two weekends ago we all piled into a downtown loft in a shady part of town and boiled in the sauna-like environment while we filmed the majority of the pilot over two 12-hour periods. A great environment for learning, I wore multiple hats as grip/AD/PA/boom mic holder/actor/etc/etc. We recently saw some rough footage from the shoot processed through some color filters (as envisioned by Chris Nelson) and it looks AWESOME! That’s the benefit of using an Art Director/Graphic Designer/wedding videographer to shoot your project!

Now we probably have 4-days left of shooting. We’ll be shooting this Sat evening in downtown agian. Shouldn’t be that tough, it’s a couple of short scenes.

Scene study class
I’m back in class at the studio (Joanne Baron/DW Brown). I figured that I need to be back in class since I’ve started auditioning more lately. Especially after the guest-starring role pre-read audition for Malcolm in the Middle. So I brought a dramatic monologue and comedic monologue to class and was asked to perform first. I felt I did o.k. but when I received the critique from the acting coach the under-riding subtext was “you graduated from the two year program so why didn’t you apply the method that was taught you?” DOH! Well, that’s really my own subconscious talking but it’s a valid point. So now I really have to work on my monologues and bring them back next week. In addition, I have also been assigned a scene partner and the play “Doubt” which we’re suppose to pick a scene from to perform.

It’s 5am. My ass is at the gym
With my new job schedule (8am-5pm) I’ve been trying to get to the gym at 5am to get my workout in. My goal is to get in the best possible shape to help with my marketability as a leading male actor/model. I haven’t been that successful so far (working out at 5am, nor as an actor/model for that matter) but I’m getting there - I did two workouts this week at 5am!

Then there’s just general life. Life in the hood is still dramatic with two drunken high-speed crashes on our block within the last two months (nobody got hurt luckily). H and I have been going to Todai pretty frequently as well as making several trips to the Hollywood Bowl to drink wine, eat cheese, fruits and listen to good music. Moon cake festival is in a couple of days, I already received my moon cakes and I can’t believe fall is upon us and the holidays are once again, right around the corner.

The devil went down to Georgia.

It’s been a while since my last entry. Honestly recently I’ve been feeling pretty un-inspired, un-creative, un-motivated, and generally depressed. I can’t seem to focus on things lately. But things have been moving along. Last weekend I traveled to Washington DC to play the small role of detective in a short film entitled “Mother’s Day”. Other than the fact that my call time changed everyday up to the actual shoot, and they only had 15min to shoot my scene, it was fun. We got to visit my brother in VA and H’s friends in MD. Walking around the capitol in 95 degree heat and 100% humidity is not recommended though. I think I lost 2lbs in sweat from just walking.

I’m STILL finishing the edit on the short film “Supernova”, and this coming Friday is the 1st day of principal photography for the comedy pilot “Jake-Off”. We finally found a location for our shoot - a downtown loft apartment in a very sketchy neighborhood. Should be interesting. At least it’s close to my house.

I also have an audition coming up for Pepsi. Here’s the catch - I have to be able to play “The devil went down to Georgia” on my violin fiddle. I was called by my agency on Friday and asked if I was good enough to play it. I said maybe, but that it might take me a while to learn. Since I didn’t hear back from them that day I figured the casting director passed on me. But today I get the call and they really want me to be able to play that song so I dusted off my violin, found the sheet music online and was able to learn the first 30seconds of the piece. Should be good enough for the audition. I think I have a pretty good chance at getting this. I also happen to be going out for “the devil”! Luckily I impressed myself on how well I’m still able to play even though I haven’t touched my violin in YEARS. We’ll see how it goes!

“Jake Off” Casting Session Day 1

Today was the first day of casting for the comedy pilot “Jake Off” written by Roy Eisenstein. It was very interesting to sit on the other side of the table for casting and see how other actors handle the audition process. To be honest I was a little dissappointed that none of my friends signed up for the auditions, but I can understand how people can be scared off from this project for several reasons: non-union, no-pay, you have to perform a 2-min monologue and you have to show three different characters. That would definitely intimidate me a little.

For the most part, casting today was a success and out of the 8 people who auditioned we found three very strong candidates - two girls and one guy. They all had good presence, were relaxed, natural, took direction well and were very funny. It really made me think of my auditions I’ve done for different projects. What did the casting people think when I left the room? Did I show potential? Did I take direction well? Did I stand out?

This process has been good and I think it will even make me a better actor now that I have been in the casting director’s shoes.
